Mei-Ling Chen was thirty-four, a graphic designer from Taipei, and she was Subject 7 in the BRIDGE trial at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. She had volunteered because the compensation was good and because she was curious — the specific curiosity of a person who works with visual perception professionally and who wanted to know what it felt like to have her perception altered from the inside.
