My dear Maria,

They are both right and both wrong and I need to say this to someone who will not fix it or dismiss it but simply hold it, the way you have always held things — carefully, without squeezing.
They are removing the drafting tables from the office. Not all of them — not yet. But the large room on the fourth floor, where I have worked for twenty-five years, is being reconfigured. Six of the twelve tables are being replaced with computer workstations. AutoCAD. You have heard me say this word. It is a program that does on a screen what I do on paper. It draws lines. It calculates dimensions. It produces plans.
I have seen the plans it produces. They are perfect. The lines are perfectly straight. The dimensions are perfectly calculated. The lettering is perfectly uniform. The AI does not have this conversation. The AI optimizes for structural integrity, energy efficiency, cost, and compliance. It produces buildings that are objectively superior to mine in every measurable dimension. They are structurally sound, energy-efficient, cost-effective, and compliant. They are also — I don't know how to say this without sounding like I am making an excuse — they are also empty. Not physically empty. Conceptually empty. Elena, 2029: The firm is offering retraining in AI design oversight. Two weeks. I am to learn, at forty-one, how to review the work of a system that can produce in twenty minutes what took me six months. The course is professional and thorough. But my mind is confused. It wants to design. It wants to make the choices — the wall here, the window there, the ceiling at this height because the room is for reading and reading wants intimacy. The AI does not want.
