The Bedtime Storyteller: Why Children Prefer the Wrong Version

She introduced a problem that the character needed to solve, and then she forgot the problem and introduced a different problem, and then she remembered the first problem but solved it with a solution that belonged to the third problem, and the story ended not with resolution but with exhaustion — hers and the children's — at a point that was emotionally satisfying without being narratively coherent.
The children — Lily, seven, and Marcus, five — demanded Nana Rose's stories specifically. Not the AI stories. The AI bedtime stories were excellent. The family's home system generated personalized narratives — calibrated to each child's age, reading level, emotional state, and interests. The stories were structurally sound, thematically appropriate, and illustrated with generated images that adapted in real time to the child's engagement metrics. The AI stories were, by every measure, better.

The study

When the AI told a story, the narrative was complete. The child received a finished product — coherent, resolved, structurally sound. The child's role was to receive. The cognitive work was minimal: attend, absorb, sleep.

"The AI story, in its perfection, removes the gaps. It removes the exercise. The child's narrative cognition has nothing to do — the story is already built. The child is a passenger. In Rose's stories, the child is a co-pilot."

Rose read Olamide's paper.
