He had worked alone since his own master, Donald Petrie, had died in 2011, leaving Hamish the cellar and a set of tools that were older than either of them — paring knives with boxwood handles, sewing frames with brass adjustments, finishing tools engraved with patterns that belonged to a workshop in Leith that had closed in 1927. The tools were beautiful. The tools were also, in 2036, anachronistic — artifacts of a production method that had been superseded first by industrial binding, then by digital text, and finally by the AI reading systems that had, between 2030 and 2035, rendered the physical book a curiosity.

Not a relic. A curiosity. The distinction mattered to Hamish, who was precise about language. A relic was dead. A curiosity was alive but unexplained — a thing that persisted not because it served an obvious purpose but because it served a purpose that had not yet been articulated.

Catriona Mackenzie arrived in April 2036. She was twenty-four, a graduate student in the University of Edinburgh's Department of Design Informatics, and she wanted to learn bookbinding. Hamish regarded her with the specific wariness of a man who had been approached by students before — students who wanted to learn bookbinding the way tourists wanted to learn pottery, for the experience, for the photograph, for the line on the CV. The page turn. A physical page turn required a sequence of motor actions: the finger's approach to the page edge, the tactile assessment of paper thickness, the lift, the arc, the placement. This sequence took approximately 1.2 seconds. During those 1.2 seconds, the reader was not reading. Digital reading had no page turn. The scroll was continuous. The text flowed without interruption. The 1.2-second gap did not occur. The processing pause did not occur. The reader received the text in an unbroken stream, and the cognitive system, deprived of its micro-pauses, processed the text differently — more quickly, less deeply, with less integration, less retention, less of the specific cognitive benefit that the physical gap between pages provided.

The page turn was not a limitation. It was a cognitive instrument. The gap was the point.

The apprenticeship

She learned the way all physical skills are learned — by repetition, by failure, by the gradual accumulation of micro-adjustments that transform a novice's uncertainty into a craftsperson's fluency. She pared leather. She sewed signatures. She backed spines and laced boards and tooled titles in gold leaf with finishing tools that required a temperature Hamish maintained by touch — by holding the tool near his cheek and feeling whether the heat was right.

"How do you know the temperature?" she asked.

"I just know."

The defense

Catriona defended her thesis in August 2037. The committee was unanimous. The perfect score was a number. Hamish's response, when Catriona told him, was not a number.
